Duncan is the Founder and Managing Director of Coffs Coast Health Clubs located in Toormina and Moonee. These clubs are the trusted community health clubs since 2009 due to their comfortable and relaxed atmospheres. Their team’s contribution to the local community, schools, sports teams, events, and charities.
I have played sport my entire life representing at both club and state levels but decided after school, that fitness was my future. My first role was as reception/maintenance/cleaner/sales/personal trainer and whatever else in the gym at Hyatt Hotel Canberra. I did all the shifts the manager would give me at any time because I just loved the fact that I could have such a positive impact on so many lives.
I started studying to be a personal trainer straight after school and then went on to study nutrition and business at uni after that. My first gym here was Harbour Health Club in 1996, then Pacific Bay Resort and then I was offered the opportunity to move to back and manage the gym at Hyatt Hotel Canberra at the age of 21. I have founded, bought and sold some fitness businesses but Coffs Coast Health Club is my family’s home forevermore. My kids love it (especially kids club) and Carla (wifey) is in her element teaching classes and helping everyone every day.
Well, I think it because since 2009 we have won various Fitness Australia and Coffs Chamber of Commerce awards but we have also won a Telstra Business Award which is a pretty big achievement for a local Coffs business. I think the main reason we won those awards is that everything we do is to empower the Coffs Coast to be the happiest and healthiest community in Australia.
We love our members and our community and each year our team donates over $50,000 to local causes and immeasurable time to support community events. I think it’s about our culture; we attract caring individuals that see the bigger picture instead of just their own needs and that goes for our members too.
When I first started running fitness businesses 20 years ago, the industry was pretty boring. Sometimes only one GloboGym in each area and the bodybuilders intimidating the general public out of the free weight area. Coffs to have such a diverse range of health clubs and fitness businesses. Today, things are truly different and we are blessed.
We have plenty of options from our two clubs to Genesis, BeachBodies, Powerhouse, MyGym. Also the like through to CrossFit and group training options like GirlFit, Vibe, She and FitFix.
We all do business differently. It’s just a matter of finding a fitness business that has everything you need and an atmosphere you can see yourself consistently exercising in.
I hope you don’t mind me plugging them all but I believe when we all work together; we can do amazingly positive things with the community’s health and the future of fitness is in collaboration. Online programs, FitBits, and apps all have their place in the future. At the end of the day we are social creatures and human interaction is critical to us all achieving our goals.
Our mission is to provide the region with a one-stop-shop for health and fitness services. This means we provide everything on-site from 24/7 memberships to physiotherapy, massage therapy, exercise physiology, nutritional consulting, weight loss programs, group exercise classes, kids clubs, personal training, and natural supplements all under the one roof.
We also provide real learning and training environment for anyone wanting to become a personal trainer. Through the Australian Institute of Personal Trainers, who chose our club for their registered training organizations base. I’m not sure everyone is aware that we do so many different things. We’re not just a gym.
