What is your diet and exercise background, Pat?
I don’t have a background in diet and exercise, to be honest. I’m reasonably unhealthy and did not eat well. I did try going to the gym a few times in the past but always ended up lacking in motivation. Letting my membership lapse and going back to my “old ways.”

So where do you think it all went wrong?
I didn’t have a good basis to start with though with and the combination of working a job where I would change from night shift to day shift up to three times a week it made it hard to eat at “normal” times. Add that to a lack of motivation and it kind of snowballed into me weighing around 115 kg.

What motivated you to find a solution to the problem?
Tia and I are getting married in September of this year and I set myself a personal goal of getting to 95 kg. The main motivation was to look good for my beautiful fiance on our special day and to be able to look back on our photos and be happy with the way that I look in them.

How did you go about making that positive change?
After talking to Tia, we decided to start looking for a gym, so that we could start heading in the direction of the goals we had set ourselves. After talking to someone at her old job, she recommended we look at the Moonee branch of Coffs Coast Health Club. Once we did and saw the quality of the gym. The professionalism of the staff and the childminding services they offer, we couldn’t say no. We also decided to look at getting some personal training as Tia had done so in the past and it had worked for her.

Why did you choose Kylie as your personal trainer?
The Moonee Beach Club Manager Lee recommended Kylie to us after we talked to him about our goals and motivation the kinds of ways we wanted to train. I’ve never done any kind of personal training before. I didn’t know what to expect from our first session. Kylie incorporates weight loss and core strength training into our sessions. She always does things a little bit differently each time so that we aren’t just doing the same thing.

 

What goals have you achieved so far?
While my overall goal is to achieve a weight of 95 kg before the wedding, a little goal I set myself was to first get below 100 kg. I achieved that on the 19th of May and while I still have a little way to go. Now I have the confidence and knowledge to lose those remaining 5 kgs.

What are your goals for the future?
A future goal is to continue on this fitness journey to become a fitter and healthier person. I can then help show my children and friends that it doesn’t matter where you start. If you have the determination and are willing to put in the hard work, you will be able to achieve the goals you set for yourself.

What is the most useful advice you could share with other readers?
Don’t listen to the people that say you can’t do something, even if it is your voice saying it. Push a little harder, work a little bit more each time and always remember to never give up. No matter how tough it may seem. There is always a light at the end of the tunnel, even if you can’t see it from where you’re standing right now.
