The inspiring goals and story of Penny O’Doherty and her Personal Trainer Sheree Pate.

What is your diet and exercise background?
I had always played the sport until the last few years. Guess everyone tried to watch what I’m eating? I joined the gym last year. So where do you think you were going wrong? I now know it was the amount of food and type of food but mostly when I was eating which caused the weight to creep up over the years, also tired and felt sluggish which then caused more comfort eating. 

Then what motivated you to find a solution to the problem?
September last year I started to suffer allergic reactions, swelling on face and arms. Over Christmas and the summer heat, it was unbearable I was needing to take oral steroids just to function. My goal is to make a lifestyle change. After Christmas, I got back to the Gym with the support of my husband Troy 3-4 times per week. A couple of weeks after getting back to the gym the Healthy Inspirations No Butts Challenge was mentioned in Cycle class.

I had already started to make changes and with the support of another friend, I signed up, hoping this would be the support I needed for real change in my well being. Also to help me to get in and out of the Triumph TR7 V8 Rally Car Navigators side easier. (they are small seats)

How did you go about making that positive change?
Firstly I mapped work, children and gym classes to work out when I was going to be able to commit to going then stuck to the commitment each week. It was a huge mental change to have to get up early, to do at least two 6 am classes a week plus others in afternoons – Who knew there was two 6 o’clock in a day! By having a supportive husband to go to the Gym with and Group Personal Training has been the biggest change.

 

Having regular appointments with Healthy Inspirations coaches to talk to about food has helped to stay on track. Also discussions with my children and workmates on exactly what I was doing. What I could and could not eat which helped them to be actively supportive daily.

Why did you choose Sheree as your personal trainer and what have you been doing together to achieve your goals?
I had been doing Cycle class with Sheree as the teacher since the middle of last year. I thought I would hate cycle and did not want to go to start with but my husband was going and enjoying it, so I went along to support him too and I love it now!

 

Sheree is always very encouraging and supportive in the class. So when she mentioned as part of the challenge she would be doing Personal Training I decide to sign up with her.

Troy (Husband) has been coming with me to the small group personal training sessions with Sheree for the past 3 months. Sheree has been mixing it up each week for us with boxing, Strength training and lots of circuits. Often the circuits have us competing against each other which has been fun and motivating at the same time.

What goals have you achieved so far?
The biggest goal I have achieved is the goal to do something and the will power to keep going. I have achieved my short term goal in the challenge, which is about 1/3 of my long term goal for weight loss but more importantly the goal of integrating a fitness and food routine into my everyday life. The face to face weekly support has worked best for me to achieve these goals.

What are your goals for the future?
To continue to improve my fitness and continue to lose weight with the tools and motivation I have gained from Sheree and the whole team at Coffs Coast Health Club.

What is the most useful advice you could share with other readers?
Make a start, just commit to one change and find that one person who will support to do that.
