I played sport my whole life and was pretty active. Thanks to my Dad because he was very supportive and encouraging. I played school sports as well as Olympic weight lifting which I got into seriously at age 13. I competed at 2 nationals and trained at the AIS in a commonwealth development squad which aimed to get us to the commonwealth games. When I turned 20 I got into mixed martial arts and competed in some amateur fights. This was a safe and fantastic sport which many people are surprised about. I had more injuries from just a handful of rugby games. Now I’m more into my Adventure and ultra-distance racing, races such as XPD.com, GeoQuest, 100km runs, and 12-24 hr regaining events. I love the physical but mostly mental challenges that they present.
The meaning of functional movement or training has become a little lost over the years. Some tend to call any type of training involving equipment like sandbags, ropes, balls, etc as functional training. Functional movement or training simply means that it is specific to the demands imposed upon you each day. This can be seen in general life or sport-specific training. The aim is to strengthen the client’s ability to perform in their “natural world”. We also look at other factors such as nutrition, stress management, lifestyle, and fitness education.
I specialize in a broad range of clients from the general population to the amateur sportsperson, to post-rehabilitation of an injury or illness. Again it’s targeting the specific needs of the individual while working with other allied health professionals to deliver the best possible service.
This is one of the great strengths of Coffs Coast Health Club as we have massage therapists, physiotherapists, exercise physiologists, and Healthy Inspiration nutrition coaches or health professionals, that all work together to get the best outcome for our clients.
I work with both as they both have their benefits. These two services can work hand in hand. A client may start in one on one while they are taught the movement patterns they will be used within the specific class they wish to attend. A client who may have been doing classes for a while now may wish to step up the intensity a little or want to challenge themselves a little more. One on one can provide that specificity while they continue with their classes.
Besides simply becoming a stronger human being? I have a ton of program ideas that I will be running since moving up here. Being health professionals my big interest is getting people outdoors and outside their comfort zone to experience something new. With my background in adventure racing, I will be running some great outdoor events as well as educational seminars, and youth programs.
